Manchester United record signing Angel di Maria has revealed that former United superstar Cristiano Ronaldo played a huge role in convincing him to move to Old Trafford in the summer. The Argentine signed for the Premier League outfit in a £ 59.7 million deal that also made him the British transfer record holder. He eclipsed Fernando Torres’ £ 50 million move to Chelsea a few years ago. Unlike Torres, di Maria has been a revelation in the league so far. He has already contributed several goals and assists for his new team and this has helped them regain their footing.
United went several matches without a win under new manager Louis van Gaal before the goals and assists from di Maria helped them move into the top four of the table. The presence of di Maria has had such an impact that former club record signing Juan Mata, who moved to the club only last January, has been on the bench more often than not in the last few weeks. The real test for United welcome in the coming weeks when they take on Manchester City and Chelsea. For the moment, di Maria is getting all the applause and he has thanked Ronaldo for convincing him to move to Old Trafford.
Ronaldo himself has spoken about returning to United in the near future. “Before we knew I was coming to Manchester, he told me it’s a massive club, I would be very happy here and it would be good for me. At that time we didn’t know for sure that I was coming or not so we didn’t go into great detail but what he did say helped me greatly to make my decision. It is a source of motivation. When you wear a shirt that’s been worn by the likes of David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, it’s something you’re always going to be pleased about,” said Di Maria.
