It has been revealed that out-of-favour Manchester United winger Memphis Depay was advised to join Tottenham Hotspur instead by fellow Holland international, Eljero Elia prior to the big-money move.
Former United coach Louis van Gaal sanctioned the purchase of the Dutch player from PSV Eindhoven for £25m in 2015, but the player has struggled to make impact since his arrival at Old Trafford.
The 22-year old talented player, who has played for PSV all his pro football life, ignored the warnings of his compatriot in signing on for the Red Devils. Elia was with Southampton on loan last term, and he dished out free advice about the pressure at Old Trafford in case of a loss of form but Depay decided to try his luck. So far his has not had enough luck and might have to exit the side in the January as interests from various quarters come in.
“I thought Memphis first had to make a stop, first choose a club like Tottenham Hotspur. United are so big, the pressure is so high.
“He had to immediately make an impact at such a club, while everyone would watch him. Memphis accepted my opinion, but said, ‘I’ll try to give my all and I’m confident that I can succeed there’,” Elia said.
Whilst Elia’s advice turned out seemingly correct, there are other stars that go on to impress despite the odds. Everton are at the fore of getting Depay in January on a loan deal. Toffees manager Ronald Koeman has openly declared his interest in signing Depay when the next transfer window opens. The loss of form of the left winger has seen his valuation drop but it is unknown if Mourinho would agree to a move for the Netherland star given that the coach opted to renew the contract of other United players with similar stats.
