Easter in China

Filed under: Holidays — RedKemp @ 5:14 pm

As you might guess, Easter is not a big deal in China. Maybe because it doesn’t have the glitzy glamor and decorating that Christmas has going for it people here can’t really get into it. I don’t know. I keep looking for it but the only indication that I have seen of its coming is that one of the foreign bakeries here has some chocolate eggs and rabbits, that frankly are not that good. The only other rabbits that I have seen is from the guy who sells baby ones to the school kids by our apartment. They are in little blue cages and I would rather not think about what happens to them after they are bought.

I looked around a little online and didn’t find to much information about it. I did however enjoy this Easter in China small piece since it is not about Easter at all only about eggs and coloring eggs.

The Chinese believed in the sacredness of eggs and gave them as gifts during joyful celebrations.

Eggs have been a symbol of spring and fertility.

At least 3000 years ago the Chinese painted eggs red for spring festivals.

Historic documentation tells us that in 722 B.C. a Chinese Chieftain gave painted eggs as gifts in celebration of a spring festival.

I wish it had mentioned cancer-causing red dye eggs. Also, if you have some interest in learning some Easter vocabulary Chinesepod just did a lesson on Easter that is good. From it I learned that the Easter is 复活节. literally “Resurrection Holiday”. Good Stuff. You can listen to it below.
