Manchester United crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stages after suffering a much expected 3-1 defeat against reigning champions Bayern Munich. This sends the Premier league club out of the competition after a 4-2 defeat on aggregate. United came into the match hoping that they would be able to spring a surprise just as they did in the first leg by managing a 1-1 draw. However, the dream lasted for only 60 seconds after Bayern Munich equalised through Mario Mandzukic.
Patrice Evra had given United the lead in the second half through a fantastic effort. The goal gave United a huge hope since it cancelled out the away goal from Bayern Munich in the first leg. David Moyes said after the match that he is now focused on getting the club back to Europe’s elite competition. Winning the Champions League was the only way United were looking into qualify for next season’s competition, as their league position is far too low to even consider challenging with five matches remaining.
Moyes accepted that it is now almost impossible for United to be in the Champions League next season, but he is hoping for a swift return to the competition nonetheless. The defeat puts an end to a disastrous campaign for United.
“We have not got Champions League football, that’s the way it looks, but I believe that it is not far away, and hopefully it will be one year away. We have got to rebuild and our focus is to get a team that can get back into this competition. It is a great competition – we have really enjoyed it – and there is no shame in going out to Bayern Munich. My focus is to get a side that gets us back in the Champions League and that is the main objective,” said Moyes.
